The new '57 Thunderbird was a great success, selling 21,380 units, up 37% from 1956, but was replaced by the first 4-seat Thunderbird in 1958 which has made the '57, as the last of the 2-seat Thunderbirds, a desirable collector car. The '57 T-bird's base engine was the new 312 cubic inch V-8 rated at 245 horsepower.

Longer and lower, the '57 T-bird made exceptional use of Ford's 'high-canted fenders' with their angled fins, a taller trunk lid that accommodated the spare tire inside the trunk while still having adequate luggage room. Completely redesigned for a one-year only production, the '57 Thunderbird is regarded by many as the most attractive of all the 2-seat T-birds. Power was adequate with the 292 cubic inch Y-block V-8 of 198hp, but steadily increased, especially with the 1957 Thunderbird. Introduced as a 1955 model to compete with Chevrolet's two-year old Corvette and with the flood of two-seat sports and touring cars coming from Europe, Ford designed its Thunderbird less as a sports car and more in the context of comfortable daily driving.
